Semester Program Overview

High impact experiential learning inspired by the uniqueness of Sicily.  
Semester programs at MADE focus on innovation, skill building, and drawing from the unique assets of Sicily. With the Mediterranean as their classroom, MADE students can study fine arts, design, liberal arts and sciences, or Italian studies.

MADE programs are designed to empower students to engage with the unique traits of Sicily, while pursuing their individual passions, developing key career competencies, and embracing their creativity.

COMPULSORY COURSES TRACK OF CHOICE 
Italian Language & Culture Art / Design
Documenting Sicily: A Multimedia Approach Interdisciplinary Mediterranean Studies
Directed Undergraduate Research  Italian Studies 

Our approach is unique and is geared to help accelerate each student’s personal, academic, and professional goals. Whether an artist, a seeker of science, or a lover of history, we offer both compulsory courses and electives, designed to give every MADE student a platform to create the ideal study abroad program aimed to impart creativity and impact careers. 

Students take five (5) courses throughout the 15-week term and earn 32-34 ECTS, or 16-17 US semester credits.  There are three (3) required courses that start immediately upon arrival, including:

  1. Italian Language & Culture - Required, 6 ECTS 
    (Offered at all levels for the first four (4) weeks of the semester) 
    Each student will begin the semester with a 4-week intensive Italian Language and Culture course in order to prepare to successfully engage with the local community throughout their program. 
  2. “Documenting Sicily: A Multimedia Approach,” Required, 8 ECTS 
    (During the full 15 weeks)  
    In this course, students will document their experiences through creative reflections in photography, drawing, and creative writing as they interact with visits to historical sites, local NGOs, community organizations, and the island of Lampedusa. 
  3. Directed Undergraduate Research - Required, 6 ECTS
    (During the full 15 weeks)  
    Each student will enhance their understanding of research methodologies and strengthen their research skills as they pursue their individual academic and career interests. 

Choose a Track: 
Students will choose one of three tracks, detailed below, in addition to the three required courses listed above. Each track has two (2) courses and allows students to hone their academic focus while in Syracuse. 

  1. Art & Design Track  
    (2 courses, 12 ECTS) 
    Associated Areas of Study: Art, Architecture, Ceramics, Design (Fashion, Graphic, Interior, Set, Sound), Film, Music, Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture, Urban Planning
  2. Interdisciplinary Mediterranean Studies Track 
    (2 courses, 12-14 ECTS)
    Associated Areas of Study: Anthropology, Classics, History, Gender Studies, Philosophy, and Sociology courses, and Contemporary Mediterranean Studies, including Anthropology, Environmental Studies, Entrepreneurship, Geography, Geology, Economics, History, Management, Political Science/International Relations and Urban Studies/Planning
  3. Italian Studies Track  
    (2 courses, 12 ECTS)
    Associated Areas of Study: Italian Language, Literature, Communications, Film Studies, History, Political Science
