MADE programs are designed to empower students to engage with the unique traits of Sicily, while pursuing their individual passions, developing key career competencies, and embracing their creativity.
MADE programs are designed and delivered by its diverse faculty, comprised of professors, artists and designers from around the globe, with two specific goals in mind:
- To use our strategic location, natural resources, and unique history to offer a program that sets our students apart;
- To help preserve the artisans, traditions and creative cultures of the Mediterranean Basin .
These objectives are achieved through MADE’s practical, hands-on, place-based approach to its interdisciplinary curriculum, where students work closely with professors and peers in small classes and get to know the region of Sicily through instructional site visits and field projects (Appendices A and B). Courses reflect the reality of living, studying, and working in Sicily, and students are asked to examine global challenges throughout time through multiple and varied critical lenses, ranging from classical philosophy to the modern field of migration studies. At MADE students have extensive opportunities for experiential learning, thanks to the City of Syracuse and Sicily’s rich history, geography and culture. Moreover, all semester students will enroll in a Directed Undergraduate Research credit-bearing course, and will complete their own research project with faculty and field mentors over the course of the semester.
